In recent years, implant prosthetics has become preferable when restoring missing teeth.  It not too much to say that, besides the financial issues, implant prosthetics brought good news for edentulous patients who are not able to chew well.  In addition, implant prosthetics gives hope for those patients who have only few missing teeth.

However, clinicians know that if the prognosis of the gingiva were considered, many of implant prosthetics did not make the patient happy in regard to the esthetic aspect.  In the long term, gingiva recesses, and it is difficult to maintain the esthetics.  It is seldom to find the report for the longevity of implant prosthetics.  Therefore, I think that bridge restorations with ovate pontic would give better prognosis than implant prosthetics if there is a sufficient number of abutments available.   There are clinicians who have doubts on ovate pontic, but our clinical evidence shows good outcome and prognosis.

In this lecture, I will discuss prognosis and esthetic of ovate pontic, and illustrate step-by-step laboratory procedures.  If you watch my co-worker Takashi Takizawa’s lecture along with this one, this lecture will give you better understanding of the concept and philosophy in our laboratory.
